Tuesday, October 28th, the Fayetteville High School Band will host a two-and-one-half mile March-a-Thon" at Harmon Field on the from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The band will march around the track to prepare for the New York parade. The "March-a-Thon. will also give students an opportunity to raise money for their trip. Students are asking for pledges of at least $2 per mile or $5 per person, but they would be happy to accept more. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the FHS Band's first trip to the Macy's Parade. In 1998, they were the first Arkansas band to appear in the Thanksgiving Parade. And they are the only Arkansas band to march in the parade twice. The Fayetteville band is one of only ten bands selected from 300 applicants. The band also performed in the 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade, the 2004 Fiesta Bowl Parade and the 2001 Hollywood Christmas Parade.
Each of the 201 band members must raise $1250 to cover most of their individual expenses for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade trip. The final installment of that total is due at the end of this month.
The band must raise additional money for expenses such as transporting instruments and uniforms. The total fund-raising goal for the New York trip is nearly $450,000. For information on how to help the band, visit the band's web site at www.fayettevilleband.com.
